MARRIAGE IS NO BUSINESS OF JUST TWO PERSONS!
The mistake often made by the couples entering into the bond of marriage is that they believe that marriage is a business of two persons. We are not speaking about two families getting untied by marriage. Marriage of two cultures taking place simultaneously with every union of men and women is an inevitable aspect of marriages. But, there is something greater!
Archbishop Fulton J Sheen, in his famous book ‘Three to get married’ makes this point clear. Listen to what the eloquent preacher says, “The basic error of mankind has been to assume that there are only two needed for love: you and me…really it takes three: self, other selves and God; you, me and God…One cannot tie two sticks together without something outside the sticks; one cannot bond the nations of the world together except by recognition of a Law and Person outside the nations themselves…”
If we make an analysis of the reasons behind the escalating divorce cases today, we can understand that nuptial relationships today has become more person-centric than God-centric. If a problem arises between persons united in marriage, they try to resolve it in their own means, which can cause further wounds and eventually end up in divorce. Whereas, if the couples are God-centered, they would rely upon God and His grace in order to resolve their problems. They will be ready to surrender to a superior Will – that is God’s Will. They will pray for Gods’ healing grace.
If the wedlock is self-centered, the couples will be more pre-occupied with their own likes and preferences. In that case, the likes of the partner will be ignored and rejected. Thus clashes and fights occur. Whereas in God-centric wedlock, the couples will seek the good of the partner and respect the likes and wishes of the partner; above all they together will seek the will of God.
So, that is the secret of happy married life. The presence of the Third One – that is God. Happy married life!
