A Miracle in the Warfront

Do you believe God will listen to someone’s prayers and send his angels to safeguard when you are caught up in raging warfront? If you believe please read ahead. If you don’t believe also, please read ahead to discover it. One of the finest examples of the power of prayer, this incident is narrated in Goldmann’s autobiography ‘The Shadow of his wings’.

Gereon Goldmann, a German seminarian whose younger days were lived during the Nazi time, was forced to serve the Nazis in the warfront. The military troop, in which Goldmann was a member, was in Sicily. They were outnumbered by their opponents, the English. They could move only under cover of darkness.

One day, when they were hiding and resting in the forest, Goldmann heard a strange loud voice shouting: “Get up and work!”

Startled, Goldmann woke up and quizzed who had shouted at him. But he could see no one there. So, he went back to sleep. A few minutes passed in silence. Then the voice resounded again. He asked, “Who are you?” There was no answer; and he noticed that everyone else was sleeping. He looked around dubiously for a while and went back to sleep again. Only a few minutes had passed, when the voice resounded again for the third time, this time louder with urgency: “Get up and work!”

Now Goldmann came to the realization that it was a sign from heaven, a divine voice of warning. He got up at once, grabbed the shovel and began to dig a foxhole.

The other soldiers, woke up by the sound of the shovel hitting the ground, thought he was crazy. But, Goldmann had no doubt; he carried on with his strange task. Watching his earnest act, one of his friends came forward to join him while the rest of the soldiers laughed at them. When a body-long foxhole was dug, Goldmann lay down exhausted. As he looked up at the sky, he was horrified to see ten bombers circling like vultures above him. They had been spotted!

The bombers plunged down and showered twenty bombs on them. Goldmann and his lone  companion jumped into their foxholes, covered themselves up and lay there in prayer. Goldmann had the Blessed Sacrament in his pocket, and he turned on his stomach to protect it. The scoffers, even though made desparate attempt to find cover among the trees, were all killed.

Three weeks later, a letter came from Sister Solana May (the old nun who had dedicated her life just to pray for Goldmann). In the letter she had narrated what exactly had happened to her on the night Goldmann faced the lethal bomber attack. On that night, she was overpowered by a strange sense of fear. She got up from the sleep immediately and rushed to the chapel to pray for Goldmann’s safety. “Guardian angel, save him!” she prayed in tears.

The hour that she awoke with the fear was the very hour that he first heard the voice!
